Twitter: we don't tolerate abuse. Also Twitter ........

In the last week we have had two hateful accounts, targeting women, suspended by Twitter. Both were hosting intimate images, shared without consent.

We then reported this account to Twitter. An account that has Tweeted over 4,000 times in less than a month sharing links to criminally stolen intimate content.

The account has been set up to profit from the misery suffered by victims of crime. Women who have had their accounts hacked and intimate images and videos. Each Tweet is a link to a criminal website which sells these images and videos in breach of each woman's rights in privacy (and whole number of other laws).

Twitter's response: "We’ve reviewed the content, and didn’t find a violation of our policies, so no action will be taken at this time".

"If the content is hosted on a third-party website, you’ll need to contact that website’s support team to report it".

Those words - "that website's support team" are laughable. They are links uploaded to Twitter by criminals leading to a website operated by criminals. Twitter is content to facilitate access to criminal and abusive content, so long as the actual content is not hosted on its servers.

We will pursue the criminals, just as we will pursue other criminals that harass and share images and videos without consent, but Twitter, one of the most influential voices and platforms in the world has chosen to abdicate responsibility.

They added: "Your safety is the most important thing, and if you believe you are in danger, we encourage you to contact your local authorities."

Translation: "If you believe you are in danger, it's not our problem"
